Healthy Food For My Skin
I’m sure everyone’s heard the saying, “you are what you eat,” but I’m going to take it a little further and add that “you are what your skin eats” too. Over the past few years, I’ve become very aware of all of the many toxic ingredients that are being put in our personal care products. For myself, it’s not good enough anymore to just focus on eating gluten-free, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, organic, non-gmo food.

I’ve always tried to focus on the things that are in my control as far as my health is concerned. Now, I’m focusing on being aware of my skincare, makeup, and personal care products. Did you know that the United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938. What the heck?
Random fun fact about me: about 10 years ago I was a Sales Director for a large beauty and cosmetic company. I loved being able to share my favorite products and educate girls and women on how to use them and take care of their skin. Back then I didn’t know that a lot of ingredients in personal care products can be hormone disrupting and contribute to hormonal imbalances. I was only concerned with how well my products worked for me and how they made me look. Reflecting back on it now, that’s pretty vain.
Fast forward to today, knowing that I have an autoimmune disease (Hashimoto’s), hormonal imbalances, digestive and gut issues (thanks SIBO) and a sluggish liver that already has a hard time detoxing on it’s own. I’m doing everything in my power to put only the best quality ingredients in and on my body.
I don’t know why, but switching out my personal care products has been super hard for me. Maybe because I just didn’t know what brand to try. I would see a lot of “natural” products at my local health food store and bought some to try. But I was never super impressed and didn’t LOVE them. I feel like switching to safer “skin food” is the final piece to eliminating as much of the toxin and chemical exposure in my house that I can. I’ve added in essential oils and starting making some simple household cleaning products, as well as running my diffuser pretty much 24/7 to help clean the air.
Environmental toxins are pretty much everywhere we turn, so I don’t freak out too much when I’m out and about. Sure, I’m breathing in junk and pollutants in the air, eating some maybe questionable oils and ingredients from restaurants, and so on. But, I feel so much better when I make better choices with all of the things that are in my control. The food I make at home and the products I use for personal care and for my home.
I’m sure you’ve heard that our skin, or “epidermis” is our largest and fastest growing organ. Did you know that our skin is a passageway that helps rid our bodies of toxins and waste build up. BUT, when our pores are clogged from being congested and blocked by chemical and pollutants, it can’t function properly and do it’s job of removing all the junk.
With that said, I’m so excited to share with you a line of safer beauty products, called Beautycounter, that I’ve been using for the past 4 months. I was introduced to Beautycounter by one of my paleo food blogging friends, Arsy, from Rubies and Radishes, and I completely admire and trust her with all of her recommendations. She explained to me that Beautycounter has banned over 1500 ingredients. Here’s a list of ingredients Beauty Counter will never use, Never List. All of their products are rated 0-2 by the Environmental Working Group’s SkinDeep product database.
On average, us women use between 12-20 personal care products everyday before we leave the house. Think about it, all the things in your shower like shampoo, conditioner, face wash, body soap, lotions, deodorant, hair styling products, makeup, and on and on. How many of those products have hormone-disrupting ingredients in them? Probably a lot!
So, true story, when I first got all my products from Beautycounter, I literally took a box and threw all the junky products I had accumulated over the years into it. Why do we hold on to so much makeup that we don’t use? I mean seriously, some of the things I found in my drawers were like 10 years old. SO GROSS!
Here are the products that I’ve tried so far and love and I’ll share how you can get these products for yourself!
